FRANKFORT, Ky. – In case you missed it, the Kentucky Democratic Party kicked off its statewide tour in defense of Medicaid and the Kentucky families, health care workers, hospitals and clinics who depend on it. The tour started in Perry County, where 51% of the population is insured through Medicaid. Each stop will amplify local voices and highlight key aspects of the GOP-induced health care funding crisis, including the effects of extreme Medicaid cuts on the war against addiction:
“As many as 200,000 of our neighbors may lose their health insurance and 35 rural hospitals are now at risk of closing, taking 20,000 good-paying health care jobs from places that really can’t afford to lose them,” said Zack Hall, Perry County Democratic Party Chair. “It’s no secret many of my neighbors and friends here in Eastern Kentucky voted for Donald Trump, but they didn’t vote to lose their health care, hospitals or jobs.”
“About 99% of the people who come to Beacons of Hope use Medicaid to get there. We have no other option in Eastern Kentucky,” said Greg Burke, Beacons of Hope Executive Director. “Without Medicaid, Eastern Kentucky would end up being a ghost town. Some of the highest-paying jobs we have are only here because of Medicaid. Our people deserve the opportunity to heal.”
