KDP Statement on 61st Anniversary of Medicare & Medicaid

July 30, 2026 · Kentucky Democratic Party

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Today, on the 61st anniversary of Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson signing Medicare and Medicaid into law, Kentucky Democratic Party (KDP) Chair Colmon Elridge released the following statement:

“Today marks 61 years since Democrats launched Medicare and Medicaid. These programs have saved millions of American lives and helped lift countless families out of poverty.

“Despite that, Republicans are attacking them both. Kentucky deserves Democratic leaders who will protect access to healthcare, instead of pushing it out of reach to fund corporate tax handouts and Trump’s forever wars.”

Kentucky Democrats have challenged recent Republican attacks on Medicaid, including extreme cuts leaving rural Kentucky hospitals and nonprofits at risk of closure, and President Trump’s plan to let drug prices spike for more than 270,000 Kentucky seniors on Medicare.
