Today, moments after the U.S. Senate passed a GOP-backed scheme to force Kentucky families to pay for billionaire tax breaks, Kentucky Democratic Party (KDP) Chair Colmon Elridge released the following statement denouncing the Kentucky Republicans who helped launch this unprecedented attack on working people and rural health care:
“Members of the U.S. Senate just greenlit a bill that would devastate working Kentucky families already struggling to get by and hurt our local economies, particularly in rural areas of our Commonwealth, while cutting taxes for billionaires. If Trump’s GOP gets its way, every Kentucky county will soon have more children going to sleep hungry. More parents will go to work sick and injured because they can’t afford to see a doctor. An estimated 35 rural hospitals will shut down, firing 20,000 health care workers and forcing families, even those who have private insurance, to travel for hours just to get basic care. Poverty-busting education programs will disappear, pushing low-income students to abandon dreams of becoming teachers and doctors.
“If Kentucky’s House Republicans fail to stand up for their constituents, they will be responsible for not only the largest loss of health care in American history but for leaving Kentucky’s workforce and rural communities with wounds that will take generations to heal.”
