KDP Statement on Kentucky GOP Bill Shielding Abusive and Neglectful Parents

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Today, Kentucky Democratic Party (KDP) Chair Colmon Elridge released the following statement on House Bill 707. The Republican-backed bill would take rights from neglected Kentucky children like Jonah Bevin, former Governor Matt Bevin’s son, who is seeking justice in court for alleged abuse and abandonment:

“Matt Bevin abandoned his son Jonah at an abusive facility in a foreign country. When that facility closed, Bevin left him to fight, alone and with no resources, to get back on US soil. When Jonah sought relief from this parental abandonment, what did the GOP do? File a bill to tell him and every other child facing similar circumstances: your needs don’t matter.

“Instead of fighting for neglected and traumatized children, Republicans are siding with a disgraced former governor and making all Kentucky kids less safe in the process.”
