KDP Statement on Trump Calling Kentucky Communities ‘Backwards and Poor’

August 31, 2026 · Kentucky Democratic Party

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Today, in response to President Trump’s social media post calling certain communities ‘backwards and poor’ for opposing data centers, Kentucky Democratic Party (KDP) Chair Colmon Elridge released the following statement:

“Trump’s words reflect the values of his Republican Party. Under GOP control, the state legislature blocked every single proposal to regulate data centers, despite voting to give the corporations behind them massive 50-year tax breaks — at the expense of working families.

“The sole reason Kentucky has any statewide rules at all to protect families from rate hikes and corporate takeovers is Governor Beshear. He and Kentucky’s elected Democrats are also the only people addressing Republican policies that make us poorer, including farm-killing trade wars, tariff-induced price hikes and extreme cuts to Medicaid.”
